I am so angry with all of the 'thoughts and prayers' rhetoric from our elected officials right now. After so many shootings, the answer is in our hands, and it is absolutely much more restrictive gun laws (if not getting rid of them entirely). Young people deserve so much better than this.

Thread about phones & public space 📱

Over the weekend I was in a restaurant and a dude had his phone on speakerphone and was having a loud video call on it. A guy at the next table told him to turn it down and he did.

Then, that guy left. Phone dude turns it back on. 1/

While there is a lot to be said about historical colonial relations between the Netherlands and the Dutch Caribbean islands, I’m not sure ‘brutal oppression’ characterizes the current situation at all, and makes for a convenient distraction when your country produces a huge amount of fossil fuels 🧐

My first thoughts on the Shell-Milieudefensie climate case that Shell successfully appealed in the Netherlands yesterday:
Court cases can be successful, but we cannot put all of our eggs in this basket. The courts are no replacement for more democratic action through parliaments 1/

I also think that we need to consider the out-of-region drivers of biodiversity loss, including consumption in richer areas that drives biodiversity loss in poorer areas because of land use for export production, a la ecologically unequal exchange

To be honest the way that Helene is being blamed on Biden/Harris is pretty wild. Like FEMA can definitely always do a better job and the US has emitted a lot CO2, but you cannot possibly blame Biden/Harris for all of that? Especially if you don't even believe in climate change?

I wrote a short thing about one of the reasons climate change hits certain places harder than others - air pollution! 💨

Thanks to the students at The Probe for the opportunity to work out some of my thoughts on this! 💫

Why Climate Change Unfolds Unequally
It’s a common refrain – globally, the poorest, most marginalised people bear the worst effects of climate change, but they have contributed the least to it. While there has been plenty of research est...
