i’m back home now, and so this is my day 3 and final #MozFest sticker update!

i’m glad i ended up going, there were lots of interesting talks and booths, i got to meet some people, i got to explore barcelona, it was really fun!
photo with all my stickers! on my laptop are a “don’t ask for my number, dm me on germ”, a blacksky algorithms, a mdn, a mozilla, a shiny mozilla festival, a “fork the system”, a firefox logo, a mozilla festival and for loose stickers we have the sticker sheet from mozilla, a couple different mozilla data collective stickers, a non-shiny mozilla festival sticker, a different colorway of the blacksky sticker and a big version as well, one more of each germ sticker, a firefox fan club sticker, a firefox nightly sticker, another mdn sticker

day 2 #MozFest sticker update, not much in the way of stickers yesterday! did get this sticker sheet and a cool postcard but yesterday was more of a shirts day (shirts not pictured)

i must get more stickers today!!!

also this cinnamon roll is yummy.
my laptop with the same stickers as last time + a “fork the system” sticker from mozilla, next to it are: a huge blacksky sticker, a “choose your future” mozilla postcard, a little baggie with a sticker sheet and a poster from mozilla, and of course a cinnamon roll

.tar is just an uncompressed container for files .gz is just an extension indicating the file is compressed with gzip while typical tar tools include gzip functionality, they’re independent of each other -> you can have an uncompressed .tar or a different compression like .tar.xz -> you can have a gzip compressed file that’s not a tar, like .log.gz or whatever you want gz doesn’t imply a tar or an archive, it just means a gzip compressed file whether it’s a tar or something else

besides, no provider is trustworthy forever - this is exactly the point of credible exit. sure it’s centralized but at any point anyone with the resources can spin up a new appview that uses the same data, a new relay, and then the community can move to it! with your own example of email, there are certainly providers which used to be trustworthy but i wouldn’t say they are anymore, like gmail. every company starts out good and then becomes evil, and maybe bluesky PBC is going that way too - good thing they developed a protocol that makes abandoning them easy

how does atproto introduce centralization…? the app would be centralized either way, whether it uses atproto and lets you own your data+identity or not a social app is uniquely a use case which is made way better by having a central server. if you wanted to implement something like email with atproto you would be able to do it way more decentralized i’m currently working on an atproto app that won’t rely on a central appview or relay simply because it doesn’t need it

i would say it’s the complete opposite - ATProto is a much better technical model for being able to get off of a hostile hosting provider. in Activitypub it’s very finicky and if your hosting provider bans you you lose everything immediately. with ATProto you can control your identity even if your hosting provider (PDS) is hostile and deletes you, or even if your hosting provider ceases to exist, neither of these are possible with ActivityPub i do agree that the fact that Bluesky can do this is bad, but it is a tradeoff - the ActivityPub way of doing things has many many many shortcomings, but on the other hand is way more decentralized in day to day usage. on the other hand, the ATProto way of doing things is more centralized in day to day usage, but it has much better options for controlling your own data & identity without having to host your own server, and as long as someone puts up a new AppView, that new AppView can become the new bluesky, with switching being as simple as just logging into a different app with the same account, keeping all your relationships interactions and data

i love how the new "threads" layout in Teams is literally just Slack bar for bar. it even has that dumbass "send in thread" vs "send in thread and channel" toggle that Slack does. incredible work Microsoft
