Potter. Bicyclist. Studio potter for over 50 years - always testing new glazes and different designs.
Another five finger mug handle from an over-thinking old engineer who just can’t seem to change and do it any other way. When I grab the handle, it’s just gotta feel right. That’s all…

I like the look of this blue glaze - it has a look like the ocean with sea life floating. A blue slip under several layers of glaze…

Here they are. The dynamic duo, Red and Tucker, with their talented trainer, Judy (my wife). It’s still nice enough to get out every day and spend time down at the barns, and a few leaves are left for some nice Fall color. We love this time of year.

And now for something totally different (from my wife Judy). Guilt free Halloween Pumpkin muffins. High protein (6 grams), less than 1 gram sugar & fat, 35 calories - in fancy/schmancy parchment paper ‘cups’. I am the anchor (and only) taste tester in her research kitchen. I also wash dishes…

Crystalline glazes applied over Alberta slips. Red iron oxide and Rutile about 10% in Alberta comes through the crystalline making some new smaller crystals. The sunlight can through the window and lit this one up, so I had to take a picture. Full spectrum sunlight is always best for warm colors.

Another nice surprise from the kiln.

Got a nice one out of the kiln tonight. After so many test failures, a pot like this keeps you going…

Some hope. Still too many crystals around the perimeter, but it’s progress.

Update: Not all tests work well. Not sure why the platter cracked like this, and the crystals were sure few and far between. But hope springs eternal, and the next test is cooling down now…

A platter from the kiln today…

Testing.
Alberta slips with oxides.
Mason stains in slips for background colors.
Sponge patterns. All being bisque fired a second time. I get a thicker coat of slip on the pot that way, and the second bisque ‘sets’ the slip so that it doesn’t spread or smear with the crystalline glazes. Whoa!!

This is a Chinese Good-Luck dragon that they put above new born babies to ward off evil spirits. I have this one above my studio doorway to scare off the evil kiln gods. I am always hopeful of it also bringing some Good Luck.
