I think that video game remasters across the board are so poorly handled that a studio saying "we want to do this ourselves" is actually pretty refreshing

I think a lot of oldheads have a weird false memory of sonic just being fast Mario, and they've spent the last 25 years collectively complaining that the series isn't something it never was

The music is a vital part of the identity of the game and series, this just reads like you don't actually respect games as an art form unless it's one of the pre-selected games you've decided matter more

Yeah, it's all over the game. Like you might not think of it much at the time, but this room in Hot Shelter having the transparent surface of the water behind the transparent plane of glass is a genuine technical achievement that you'd rarely see today. DX on the right can't render the water.

Hell, a monumental shitload of the cutscenes are full of references, a bunch of them flashbanging you with jpegs of previous games, Amy's entire moveset is a bizarre reference to a 30 year old manual for sonic CD, they end the game on a reference to IDW

I'm really struggling to understand what this means but like, frontiers is like 50% comprised of references at minimum. Nearly every stage is taken from a previous game and has had green hill, chemical plant or sky sanctuary assets slapped onto it

The dreamcast has hardware accelerated order independent transparency. It's the only console to ever have this, it can handle transparency better than any modern hardware. All of SA1 is designed from the ground up to show it off, that's why the whole game is about water

I'd still consider the original manga the best part of the franchise, but the first 2 arcs of the 5Ds anime gets the prestigious award of "only other unironically good story with no caveats"
