I try to be attentive to my own writing, but mostly I'm attentive to other ppl's. Indie book editor, language nerd, outdoors enthusiast, novice potter.
Flew through Exit West by Mohsin Hamid. I was looking for a change in tone after my last read & it certainly delivers. Overall vibe: contemplative & rather dreamlike. A meditation on human migration posing as spec fic. I enjoyed it & am also ready for more action next! #booksky #amreading

Currently #amreading Naomi Novik’s Spinning Silver, & I am obsessed. How does she do this? I am totally invested in the characters.

Also love how she manages to create a world that feels simultaneously fantastical and devaststingly real. #booksky

I'm late to the discourse on this book, but Madeline Miller's Circe has been slow going for me. I was about to put it down when finally something started happening. And now, it seems like I'm heading into a scene of sexual assault. It's too much for me atm. #booksky #amreading

Welp, there goes the aloe. I only meant to repot, separate some pups, and replant, but there you are 😂🙈

Reading Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang and it is INCREDIBLE. I knew some of the history, but not how recent some of it was (warlords). Incredible respect for all the survivors. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys multigenerational memoir or history.

Some water etching made me feel better about 2 otherwise rough days at the studio. And I’m pleased with the shape also! Evidence I'm not always terrible 😅🙈

The baby salt cellars have been trimmed! There was some chaos with the lids 😜 Hopefully glazing will smooth over some of my sins. And we'll see whether the holes I cut for the spoon end up being sufficient after shrinkage...

Just finished reading Stolen by Ann-Helén Laestadius--high recommend! I love how she captures the sensibility of the MC at different ages (she's 9 when we first meet her), & how she portrays the natural world. The story is tough and beautiful, as well

Today for the first time ever, I (for the most part) threw the forms I was planning to throw. Wild! 😁 These little guys will hopefully grow up to be salt cellars. Feeling unreasonably proud of myself.

My attempts at height devolved into shaping, the result of wonky, rather too thick walls that wouldn't go any higher 😆 I think they're cute little creative adaptations!

Aaand, I'm pretty psyched with how they turned out! 🤩 If I hadn't fubared the rim right after trimming the one, they'd be even better, lol

Another lidded jar for the bisque. Ran out of time to practice throwing one of those neat knob handles, so sleek and flat will have to do. If it survives, that is. One of those walls got mighty thin in the trim 😬 Becoming more aware of my throwing deficiencies with each trim 😅🙈

After much, and much protracted, forgetting, I finally ordered a riser for my computer. Thank you for your service, most excellent book, which can now go back to being a book... 🙄😝

First plates going in for bisque! 🤩
(not the first I've thrown, but the first that survived trimming 😆)

Picked up Kindred by Octavia Butler. Hooked literally from the first page! This book has deceptively simple prose. Another one I’m likely to race through. 🤩

First time trimming something with an irregular rim! Pretty pleased though could have taken some more off… Consoling myself that as a planter, some weight is good for stability, right? 😅

At some point I'll also remember to use a ruler for scale 😂

Decided to DNF Fran Ross's Oreo. I loved the premise, and she's a lively and sharp writer. The bit was funny though simply too much for me extended over book length. Feel sad though.

Lidded jar results! 😄 I really love how the glaze turned out...With the exception of the darker pot being partly glazed shut 🙈 My instructor suggested a dremel might help -- any other ideas?
They're little & the dark one is bottom heavy, but I love them.

This was a fun romp. Definitely more sleepover snack than well balanced meal, but if you read the blurb you'll have a good idea whether or not you'll like it! Sometimes laid on a bit thick, but I was here for allll the #publishing #satire 😈

Oof, this was a big glazing day! So many hours at the studio. My motto seems to be to never make anything easy for myself 😂

I've cleared my amateur backlog though and have a clean shelf for the next class session. My mom has already put in an order
