This year the sequencing was not perfect, but we got one circular (hopefully complete) genome.
On Wednesday we continue with more in depth annotations and will learn more.

En voisi olla enempää samaa mieltä.

On Wednesday the student got to whole genome sequence their isolates on the exploratory laboratory course (studies.helsinki.fi/courses/cour...).

Next weeks we will analyse the data and try to assemble as many complete genomes as possible. Thanks @nanoporetech.com for the support.

Time for the 2024 edition of the ”Exploratory microbial research, lab course” and whole genome sequencing of the students own unknown strains. This year we were supported by Oxford Nanopore, so thank you for this.

Excellent keynote by Gerry Wright. But this tree with antibiotic resistance genes is phylogenetically incorrect. #edar7

Pizza Friday! Sourdough pizzas prepared at the food processing lab (not by me, I only cut one in pieces).

There is definitely some room for improvement in our nanopore sequencing at the course, but it was the first time for both me and the students. So one closed circular genome is a victory! Altogether 6/13 were more or less succesful. #nanopore #minion

Not going so strong after 24 h. But we have an estimated 2 Gb of data. Will let it run for one more day. I hope it will be enough for the student’s 13 bacterial strains. #MinION #nanopore #MicroSky

So cool! Students doing WGS on their own bacterial isolates with MinION. 13 strains multiplexed on one flow cell. After 2 hours approx. 180 Mb of data, I hope it looks as good also tomorrow. #nanopore #MinION
