I think EU institutions tend to have the opposite problem (very good, big, deep policy thinking, not enough regard for the political retail).

Which may be because the 2024 offered common purpose (growth up, cost of living down??) lacked any fleshed out policy on what actions to take to get that - which I guess is to your point about not thinking like a government?

A good campaigner would tell a story about how new proposals fit into values of party and country. Where we've come from, where we're going. "Who am I, who are we, what's our common purpose" (per @gavinesler.bsky.social's book on leadership). We never hear answers to that from this govt

"Like campaigners..." of an esp crass type. I really doubt public opinion is where govt thinks it is (deport people 20y after arrival, honestly?). I have doorstep conversations to base this on, not proper polling data but I suspect they don't have data either on this.

As a former prosecutor with a sprecialism in economic crime I have a number of thoughts of what investigators could legitimately look at (which warrants you apply for first). There's no point in me setting those out. But no-one should think an Inquiry would have no leads to follow.

The people they could have targeted are not only UK MEPs but also APAs (= MEPs' staff) and journalists, other people of influence.

Many of the people in Brus/Stras pre-Brexit are still active in UK politics one way or another.

Hopefully not a total shutdown like that but its not saying much
