We will never forgive you.

It is disrespectful to the gay community, disrespectful to Manuel Puig’s legacy, and a tragic waste of talent. Do not watch this film; watch the 1985 original and remember what actual bravery looks like.

This remake is an act of erasure. It takes a story about the marginalized finding power in the shadows and drags it into the spotlight only to make it about someone else entirely.

By the time the credits roll, the message is clear: the filmmakers believe that a gay man's trauma is only palatable to a mainstream audience if it is wrapped in the shiny packaging of a straight diva's musical number.

The casting of Tonatiuh as Molina is inspired, but they are fighting a losing battle against a script that treats their character's identity as a plot device rather than the emotional center of the film.

The 2025 film sanitizes this struggle. It creates a safe distance. Instead of sitting in the discomfort of the cell, we are constantly whisked away to a glamorous world where the stakes are melodramatic rather than mortal.

In 1985, Hector Babenco’s adaptation was a revolutionary act. Seeing William Hurt and Raul Julia navigate sex, tenderness, and hygiene in a dirty cell challenged the world to see the humanity in a "faggot" (to use the slur Molina reclaims) and the vulnerability in a machista revolutionary.

The profound, difficult love that forms between Molina and Valentin is treated as the B-plot to a Jennifer Lopez vanity project.

We are subconsciously told that the "real" romance—the one worth the budget, the lighting, and the screen time-is the one between a man and a woman, even if they aren't real.
December 5, 2025 at 6:08 PM
In the fantasy, "Armando" is a dashing, tuxedo-clad leading man sweeping Jennifer Lopez off her feet. The film spends so much time luxuriating in the chemistry between Lopez and "Armando" that it trains the audience to root for the straight fantasy rather than the queer reality.

The decision to have Diego Luna play both the prisoner Valentin and the fantasy lover "Armando" is a catastrophe of representation. In the cell, Valentin is difficult, abrasive, and physically decaying.

Structural Straightwashing.

The film’s most unforgivable sin is structural. By expanding the "movie-within-a-movie" fantasy sequences into full-blown Technicolor musical numbers, the film effectively sidelines the queer romance in the cell to prioritize a heteronormative fantasy.

Bill Condon’s 2025 musical adaptation takes this sacred text and commits a cinematic hate crime against it: it bores us with the one thing we didn't need—straight people.

Their bond—forged in trauma, bodily fluids, and political terror—is one of the most important depictions of queer intimacy in the 20th century.
December 5, 2025 at 6:05 PM
It is a text that thrives in the claustrophobic darkness, forcing a radical confrontation between Molina, a flamboyant, fem-presenting gay man (often read through a modern lens as a trans woman), and Valentin, a stoic Marxist revolutionary.

Gee.. so sad. It's almost like I don't give a fuck.

The gall. Murdering fishermen over allegedly selling drugs and pardoning a convicted drug lord. A disgusting display of hypocrisy.

Israel has demonstrated it doesn't deserve international legitimacy. It deserves to be invaded on all sides, and the government there deserves to be dismantled.

And what giant personal benefit are they getting out of it.. oh wait.. it's taxes. Rich shitheads avoid paying their fair share and wrap it in the clothes of philanthropy. Shit journalism.
