The USA tends to think severity of punishment is the best deterrent, but it's actually certainty of punishment that deters best, even if the punishment itself is far less severe. We go for draconian but infrequent and inconsistently applied.

Cowboy hats are a problem in situations like this. You will almost certainly look stupid, and that's if the hat even fits. But a too small cowboy hat and it's a rodeo clown look; too large and you're an infant in some adult's hat.

In the 1980s silicone valley biz that needed coders often went with philosophy majors with no coding experience. The idea was fewer bad coding habits, and philosophy has this structure imposed on ideas thing going on that seems to mesh with basic coding, at least the coding of the time.

I'd always read that you had to catch the opossum(s) alive and feed them persimmons for a couple of weeks before eating them. Apparently their flavor depends on what they've been eating.

This is precisely the US car company Vs Japanese cars in the 70s. The US guys claimed Japanese cars were cheaply built and dented if you touched them. Reality was that Japanese cars then sold at a premium to retail and were far higher quality, and roomier, than US compact cars.

Actually I was wrong when I said "pay is approx 5% higher" in blue states; I should have said and it's approx 10% higher.
