As Rudolf Steiner wrote in his 1918 Notebook, “Our connection with the spirit is broken if not sustained through the medium of beauty. Beauty connects the I to the body.”

Verse 50 relates to the fifth member of the human being, the Spirit Self, and to Condition 5, ”Steadfastness in carrying out a resolution once it is taken.” From Winter’s bondage, Nature, burgeoning with joy now in its grandeur of new growth, offers its beauty to all. The physical world is part of us. In that it lives in us as mineral, we through our life, astral and I consciousness, raise these mineral aspects to their highest form—the form of the human being. This is the form designed by the Gods to receive the I, the thinking Being.

Verse 48 (week 12, 2025) relates to the third member of the human being, the Astral, and to Condition 3, ”Know thoughts and feelings to be as important for the world as actions.” Cosmic light, encompassing love and wisdom, helps us focus and perceive significance in the world. Then meaning, freedom, and ever-higher love can arise on this Earthly plane. The “light verse” is like a blessing, a prayer.

Verse 47 relates to the second member of the human being, the Etheric, and to Condition 2, ”Feel ourselves to be a part of the whole of life.” Etheric forces are powerful in this verse and in these weeks before Easter, new cosmic life-forces from Christ are pouring into the “womb of worlds” and into us! We may feel this as a sense of “becoming,” a hope of something new. The bliss or joy of becoming, of new growth that now we sense —is thus not just in the world, but in ourselves. The expansive joy one always feels in new growth, “quickens” the life of our senses —Line 2. The senses are “brighter,” “shining”! But note! With these first enticing hints of spring, the cosmos asks us to use our senses more consciously! Along with Nature’s “joy in becoming,” we are to bring to the fore our new “winter thinking,” the new clarity we’ve won regarding world existence. Rightly, this new, stronger power within will help us grasp the world of thought that brings forth Nature and its meaning for us. Each year I can experience a greater conscious awareness that a new cognitive power is within me and that is for me to use. But What this power is, Who I am truly, and Why I am here, are questions that will accompany our seeking all through the next months. This week we already feel a semi-conscious inner power to help with answers stirring within us as we accompany the world’s “joy in becoming,” the allure of new growth.

The verse for this week stems from world processes which would have us move too quickly, without proper thought clarity. This stuns and benumbs our consciousness. We are meant to stop and “take stock” of things. To aid thoughtful perception, a different soul faculty must be actively called forth and practiced —the power of true memory. But this memory is not what is normally thought of, for this memory “shines forth from spirit depths,” that holy place in us from where true imaginations arise. It connects to a growing clarity of thinking, to a higher self and warmth of will.
