Public service broadcasting The shared public sphere we need for democracy is everywhere being eroded by the simultaneous fragmentation and polarisation that results from the US capitalist version of the digital revolution. There are few easy remedies. If, however, you have a trusted public service broadcaster, as in Britain, Canada, Australia, Germany or Scandinavia, you should hang on to it for dear life, further ringfence its editorial independence, double its budget and increase its presence on social media. That Britain is doing the precise opposite by undermining the BBC, probably the world’s most widely respected public service broadcaster, is just another example of the country’s seemingly endless capacity for national self-harming. Media ownership Censorship is so old-fashioned. The modern authoritarian controls speech through ownership. In Turkey and Hungary, the leaders’ oligarchic cronies own the key media. At first glance, it may look like perfect media pluralism; behind the mask, the reality is entirely different. It’s almost impossible to formulate a general rule on this. Foreign ownership, for example, has been a curse of British newspapers (think Rupert Murdoch) but a blessing for the defence of democracy in some post-communist countries (the broadcaster TVN in Poland, for example). It’s horses for courses.

Surely the medium's ephemerality was what shaped James (& Banks-Smith's) TV crit's? "Watching the telly" was the medium: they were saying "Remember?" not "Check it out".

From the intro to the "The Crystal Bucket" (full of holes, and following the earlier, aptly-named "Visions Before Midnight"...):
Yet even by saying that much I can hear myself trying to make you remember, whereas life would be choked by thought if we did not forget. Most television is bound for oblivion and rightly so. In ways that blessedly cannot be quantified, the programmes to which gifted people have devoted months and sometimes years of their lives make fleeting marks behind our eyes and slip away.... In a given year of viewing I am regaled with as much dramatic fiction as Aristotle faced up to in a lifetime; more great music than the most passionate nineteenth-century music lover would have heard if he had lived to be a hundred; more facts and figures than I care, or dare, to think of. The head would come off its hinges if it were asked to remember what happened last year as well. So the mind protects itself, with the coarse filter of forgetting. The insubstantial pageant fades. We hope it leaves a wrack behind, but can’t be sure what the wrack is.... Why should so many talented people put so much effort into what will be forgotten? And most of it will be forgotten, no matter how dedicated the efforts to preserve it. The frightful blunder by which the BBC wiped the tapes of plays by Pinter, Owen, Gray, and other leading playwrights was merely a prematurely terminal instance of what would have happened anyway in the course of time. I like the idea of a channel for important repeats but residual payments would make it difficult to organise. And if a channel won’t organise it then the individual viewer is unlikely to either, even if all the past material were available from an instantaneous and inexpensive form of data-retrieval. There is barely time to view the present. To view the past as well would take all the time in the world. So ephemerality is likely to go on being the condition of life for everyone who works in television.
