Was thrilled to be sent a photo of this piece in the Tamworth Herald 😊
(But, m'lud, in my defence I didn't accuse Athelstan of having anything to do with his father's death. I plead guilty to the other charge of suggested fratricide though 😂)

#OTD 796 Offa of Mercia died. He's the gift that keeps on giving! He was charged with a spot of murder, argued with Charlemagne, and his wife had coins minted in her own name.
I've written about this power couple a lot, with a different angle each time:

I was talking about this strange story just a couple of days ago at Tamworth...
#OTD feast day of the saintly brothers Wulfad and Ruffin of Stone, supposedly murdered by their father, Wulfhere of Mercia, except I argue it's not true:

Oswulf became king of Northumbria in a rare instance of son succeeding father, but he was killed #OTD 759, apparently by his own household.
Read about these troubled times:

#OTD 17th July St Kenelm's day. One of my favourite stories is the supposed arranged murder of Kenelm by his sister. The story has the well-used trope of eyeballs falling out as punishment for wickedness.

#OTD 924 Edward the Elder died. Son of Alfred the Great, he had at least 14 children by 3 wives. You can read about them in my book: mybook.to/WomeninPower
He also plays a prominent role in my novel about his sister, Æthelflæd Lady of the Mercians:
