I was thinking about the steampunk subgenre, though. Though looking through my books, steampunk romantasy still seems to be somewhat popular, even if regular (I almost said "straight"!) steampunk is kind of out of fashion these days.

Really, the important thing is that he somehow has it together enough to help Our Heroine at the start and during her character arc, while still being enough of a hapless dork that she has to rescue him all the time.

I need to rework the love interest, then, since he's currently a dashing yet dorky and scholarly nobleman who falls for Our Heroine, a mysterious clockwork girl who may have murdered a bunch of people because she was kind of angry that they partly made her from the remains of a dead woman.
