A good paper from 2024 implicates the vehicle front end height. Anything taller than 1.25m (4.1 ft) increases the risk of death significantly for people walking or biking. uhero.hawaii.edu/wp-content/u...

Women and children are more likely to be hurt in these crashes than men. Likely their height versus the height of the vehicle. SUVs like this RAV make the height difference worse.

Seattle Council PTSA priorities are to "Reduce greenhouse gas pollution and improve indoor air quality". Hard to achieve either of those priorities without removing cars from school streets. Principals need to be told these goals at PTSA meetings.

Found a Starbucks cup in my kitchen today. Had a discussion with my high schooler. The first "boycott" was in Ireland over unaffordable rents and poor conditions. Captain Boycott lost.

We won't be buying Starbucks.

Police vehicles do have bull bars. You would hope the police drive more carefully but they do kill people walking as well.

We need to keep up the pressure for climate leadership. Mayor Hidalgo in Paris said the business lobby was in her office the first week threatening her politically unless she backed off on her climate and bike plans. She refused and did the right thing.

I like the Federal Highway Administration case studies on road diets (allow protected bike lanes). The one in Chicago found that "Overall capacity and level of service improved as did safety and connectivity for bicyclists". Sometimes cars just vanish!

I love the War in Cars Podcast discussion of this dreadful book a while back. As a woman I would not chase down an offending motorist on my bike as suggested by the author.

Reminds me of the famous Cary Grant line from the 1938 movie Holiday: "When I find myself in a position like this, I ask myself, 'What would General Motors do?' and then I do the opposite!"

I ask, 'Who would the Seattle Times endorse?', then I do the opposite.

Lots of comments here. I believe a statement of legislative intent as simply a maneuverer to direct some funding to the issue. That is a start at least.

Intelligent speed assist devices should be mandatory in all vehicles. I cannot think of a single reason you would need to speed & put the lives of others in danger.
