Really enjoyed taking part in the panel discussion earlier today on Feminist Metascience at #Metascience2025! In the panel I spoke about epistemic diversity and intellectual humility. We need to be considering voices that are quieter in these discussions- it shouldn’t be a battle to be heard here.

The abstract reads: Many methodological advances designed to promote openness and transparency have been primarily designed with quantitative, and positivistic methods in mind. While open research is grounded in principles that are core to qualitative scholarship- such as validity, rigour transparency, and trustworthiness, many current open research practices demonstrate little sensitivity to qualitative epistemologies. Similarly, many journal and institutional policies introduced to encourage openness and transparency may have (unintended) negative impacts on qualitative ethics and rigour (Prosser et al., 2023). Qualitative researchers have historically been quiet in the open research conversation, but it is not yet clear whether this is due to a lack of engagement from the qualitative community (unspoken), or a lack of awareness of the qualitative voices already active in this discussion (unheard). In this talk, I examine the current hopes, fears and opportunities qualitative researchers see in open research methods. To do this, I draw on the published literature on open qualitative methods, alongside data from a mixed-methods survey of qualitative researchers (N=163) (Prosser et al., 2024). In this work, we find that qualitative researchers are concerned with the ethical obligations to their participants and see ‘open science’ to be a positivistic opposition to their interpretivist epistemologies. However, they see some benefits for openness and transparency, especially in a potential for greater societal impact. I conclude my talk by questioning what an open research by and for qualitative researchers could look like, and provide some future directions for ensuring continued qualitative engagement with and contributions to open research.

The social sciences continue to move towards more open and transparent research practices. However, these changes have been driven by researchers outside of management and organisational studies and are primarily designed with quantitative methods in mind. While open research is grounded in principles that are core to qualitative scholarship- such as validity, rigour transparency, and trustworthiness, many current open research practices demonstrate little sensitivity to qualitative epistemologies. In this paper, we conduct a mixed-methods survey with qualitative management and organizational researchers (n = 163) to examine their understanding of openness and transparency, alongside their hopes and fears surrounding the use of open research practices. We find that qualitative researchers are concerned with the ethical obligations to their participants and see ‘open science’ to be a positivistic opposition to their interpretivist epistemologies. However, they see some benefits for openness and transparency, especially in a potential for greater societal impact. Finally, we bring together our empirical findings on the views of this community to discuss the potential futures for open research in management, encouraging qualitative scholars to join and shape the conversation.

Reflection over compliance: Critiquing mandatory data sharing policies for qualitative research Annayah MB Prosserhttps://orcid.org/0000-0003-2381-9556, Ralph Bagnall, and Nina Higson-Sweeney Abstract Many journals are moving towards a ‘Mandatory Inclusion of Raw Data’ (MIRD) model of data sharing, where it is expected that raw data be publicly accessible at article submission. While open data sharing is beneficial for some research topics and methodologies within health psychology, in other cases it may be ethically and epistemologically questionable. Here, we outline several questions that qualitative researchers might consider surrounding the ethics of open data sharing. Overall, we argue that universal open raw data mandates cannot adequately represent the diversity of qualitative research, and that MIRD may harm rigorous and ethical research practice within health psychology and beyond. Researchers should instead find ways to demonstrate rigour thorough engagement with questions surrounding data sharing. We propose that all researchers utilise the increasingly common ‘data availability statement’ to demonstrate reflexive engagement with issues of ethics, epistemology and participant protection when considering whether to open data.

OPEN QUALITATIVE DATA: HISTORIC DEBATES AND CHALLENGES Multiple epistemologies and perspectives on sharing data Quantitative research typically connects to the epistemology of positivism: the idea that the truth of the world is observable, measurable and can be uncovered through objective phenomena and data points (Coolican, 2018). Qualitative research methods are, by comparison, interconnected with a plethora of research epistemologies and ontologies: ways of understanding knowledge and the world, respectively (Willig, 2013). Qualitative researchers draw on a variety of research methods and approaches, and their research occupies numerous research paradigms (for a comprehensive discussion on the diversity of qualitative research in psychology and paradigms associated with qualitative research see Madill & Gough, 2008). In Table 1, we detail some of the most common epistemologies in social psychological research, summarizing their view on what might constitute “data,” as well as providing example studies that adopt these positions. Conversations about open qual are kicking off in the other place- and not for good reasons 😓 There’s a lot of great work being done by qual folks interrogating how, why and when open research is appropriate, and to see that growing work ignored by a prominent figure in open science is frustrating. 😓
