I played from the preseason till season 7 (I think) so I have a lot of experience of the old times. People didn't know how to play MOBAs to nearly the same extent back then. DotA was huge, but it was before me plus it was a fan made map so it wasn't industrialized to nearly the same degree.

At this point in League almost anyone playing would be a season one platinum and above. The low ranks are just the more casual players playing for enjoyment.
