Sometimes on a walk I play the game of Who is Most Responsible? And spend a while contemplating a person. McConnell, Roberts, himself, Biden, etc. obviously but it’s fun to do a Mark Burnett, Rupert Murdoch, Musk thought experiment too.

I’m kind of obsessed with trying to categorize it, it’s livejournal pentagon papers, post-modernism taken to its baudrillardian extreme, performance without substance or even a vague awareness of substance? It’s a v confusing age

It’s so good! Made my brain grow. I also just read American Nations by Colin Woodward which does a little of the same for the US

I’ve seen a ton in Australia too and when I mentioned it a woman said “I don’t even know when Black Friday is.” I explained it’s the day after Thanksgiving but that it changes every year & she was more confused. Also was a huge 1939 bush fire in Victoria they refer to as Black Friday so…

At the beginning the song “kookaburra sits in the old gum tree” was playing in a loop in my head (annoying) but by day 3 “Under Pressure” took up residence and stayed there, especially the end part which I never paid much attention to but feels newly relevant

This is the walk btw! You should absolutely do it, all you have to do is get to Australia and then to the Otways. It didn’t change my life but it did make me feel fully alive and ready for whatever’s next
Great Ocean Walk
The Great Ocean Walk is a one-way, long-distance walk extending just over 110km. This once-in-a-lifetime hike will take you eight days.

I couldn’t eat much though, uncharacteristically squeamish after spending more time with them than humans on the trail

Kangaroo is on all the menus and I tried it when I got back to civilization. Stir fried! It was delicious, so amazingly tender with a slight gamey finish.

I made it. 100km of rugged coastline and the world remains mostly the same. You too can walk into the wilderness for a while! World events will or won’t happen; we can hypervigilantely witness them, or stuff like this. (Reminding myself when I forgot by next week.)

I’m imagining myself emerging from the bush on Friday afternoon all Rip Van Winkle: “You there! Is America at war? Who’s the current president? Has it happened yet?”

The one good thing about 2020 was that it only took 15-20 min to get anywhere in town instead of 30-60+

In sixth grade I went to a new school where I knew no one and everyone kept asking me if I was “Gretchen’s twin” and it took like 6 weeks to finally meet the elusive Gretchen and yup we looked similar

My favorite part was when she said pap drones might be following her everywhere hiking in Malibu, probably the place with the most actual celebrities per square mile

I’m currently in Australia looking out over Melbourne rooftops, most covered with solar panels, and there was a news story that everyone was getting more hours of free energy bc it’s been so sunny lately or something

The new “investigation” is the lead story of the morning news here but they’re mostly just showing this video, masterful gambit Mr President
