I'm not a number, I don't want to take part in activities that reduce people to numbers, and so I hope stepping back will ensure what energy I do have can be spent authentically engaging with what others create.

The point of this pessimistic, somewhat rambly thread is that I'm reducing my activity in fandom spaces. I hope to continue writing, possibly even post some of it. However, there's been a broad shift to creative output being a commodity to be consumed rather than fostering a community to be shared.

A fanfic doesn't matter much in the grand scheme of things when folx are losing homes and food and freedom. Yet without things like joy (and hope) which help us retain our humanity, fighting for what matters becomes nigh impossible. I didn't want to start seeking joy elsewhere, but I think I must.

I'm losing my love for my favorite characters in these dark times we're attempting to survive right now. I don't want to lose that. I don't know how to hang onto that when people pull these stunts, either.

One of Neri's fics received a comment solely to advertise a fandom event.

No interaction with the fic itself, just an ad. Via fanfic commenting.

This feels like a new low, especially on a niche post-DA Origins story that gets little interaction in the DA4 era.

update: still looks bad

the good folx at the NWS don't use the word "catastrophic" lightly
Over 160 million people are under winter hazards associated with the impending major winter storm. Disruptive snowfall is likely from the Rockies to the Northeast, including dangerous ice from the ArkLaTex to the Mid-Atlantic. You can find a detailed forecast at weather.gov.
