The Giant Bugs was just good creature design (though whoever did the Brainbug definitely had something on their minds

See, the Harry Potter books were gateway books for many kids into Fantasy.

So were the LoTR movies.

And now we're another forty years down the track. Now it's stories like the Hunger Games (yes they are sci fi, soft sci fi but sci fi none the less) that are gateways into the genre

It's not that they can't enjoy them, it's that stories that they can relate to are more likely to draw them into the genre.

The world today is very different from the fifties and sixties, and so are the kids.

I love the foundation series but they are very definitely of an era and aimed at a particular demographic.

That demographic does not exist in under 30s anymore. Or if it does it's tiny.
