Music obsessive, deeply engaged with an omnivorous array of sound. Keep up with it all, including the Discover Music podcast, at my Linktree: linktr.ee/anearful (He/Him)
Peter Townshend - Who Came First (Track, 1972) Despite billing it as a “gynormous ego trip,” this revealed a softer, more generous side to the man. But it’s the Lifehouse demos that resonate most, along with the acoustic guitar/synth blend on Paravardigar. #5debutalbums7074

Roxy Music - S/T (Reprise, 1972) The past, present, and future of rock fission off into a mushroom cloud shot through with arty pretension and deeply felt romanticism on this staggering debut. America would feel the fallout later! #5debutalbums7074

David Lee Daniels - Black Jack Davy (Playboy, 1973) There’s enough swagger to his delivery to match the Muscle Shoals Horns, who add a lot to this album, plus the desperation of a man who knows he’s getting his one chance to make it. A fascinating enigma. #5debutalbums7074

Bobby Whitlock - s/t (ABC Dunhill, 1972) Explodes with passion and that large-band, organic quality that defined rock in the early 70s. If you’re a fan of All Things Must Pass and Layla, this should be on your itinerary! #5debutalbums7074

Fotheringay - s/t (Island, 1970/Carthage, 1986) Still and forever my favorite Sandy Denny project and Brit-folk band - Lucas and Donahue are no joke! Definitive covers of Dylan and Lightfoot along with a quiver of stellar originals that never miss. #5debutalbums7074

Glass Harp - S/T (Decca, 1970) Phil Keaggy’s high-flying guitar soars alongside strings and winds, with a pumping rhythm section and his faith providing further guidance. Beautifully recorded, too! #5debutalbums7074

Here's a hasty list for #5debutalbums7074. Lots of chancers included, but Lennon, Roxy, Eno, Ferry, Betty Davis, Fotheringay, and Bill Withers are most likely going to be battling for the top five. Lots of fun to come, @richards7370.bsky.social!

Wild Ponies - Things That Used To Shine (Ditch Dog, 2013) I stumbled on them in Nashville and became an instant fan of Doug and Telisha Williams’ moody take on classic country. This album has aged like a fine bourbon and their latest was a masterpiece! #5debutalbums1014

No Lands/Negative Space @newamrecords.bsky.social, 2014) “You might call it a synth-art-almost-pop record, hinting at 80's hit-makers without actually going there. Even with the Linn drums, there's nothing ironic going on in these lush, warmly produced pieces.” (My original review) #5debutalbums1014

Jenny O. - Automechanic (Holy Trinity Records, 2013) Great songs, great singing, stellar production by Jonathan Wilson, James Gadson on two tracks…why wasn’t this huge? At least in an indie way? Music biz mystery. On my top 100 of the decade list! #5debutalbums1014

Atoms For Peace - Amok (XL, 2013) After the slightly arid The King Of Limbs, Thom Yorke found a groovier groove with Flea (of all people), Mauro Refosco, Joey Waronker & Nigel Godrich. Holds up well, but like TKOL, also better live! #5debutalbums1014

Boogarins - As Plantas Que Curam (Other Music Recording Co., 2013) It wasn’t until 2014, when I saw these Brazilian rockers “levitate” Other Music in their first NYC appearance that I became a fan. I’ve not looked back since - they were on my Top 25 last year! #5debutalbums1014

Hospitality - s/t (Merge, 2012) Revisiting this at the end of the decade, I found “its blend of melody and melancholy so inviting” that I included it on my 100 best albums of the 2010s. It’s that good! Come back Amber Papini… #5debutalbums1014

Divine Fits - A Thing Called… (Merge, 2012) Side project? Super group? Either way this collabo between Spoon’s Britt Daniel, Wolf Eyes’ Dan Boeckner, Alex Fischel, and New Bomb Turks’ Sam Brown is neo-new wave perfection. Just wish I’d seen them live! #5debutalbums1014
