Since this is so ubiquitous now, my kid is doing a couple PSEO courses as a senior in high school and I recommend people do PSEO at my institution Bethel University. And I'm glad for undergrad students in my grad courses. 🤷

(Our family chats all evening in the kitchen but kids come and go based on sports/theater activities). My kids feel bad for kids who can't participate in high school activities because of family dinner.

This caught the Threads algorithm. What my teenagers are saying is that "family dinner" tends to mean "parent-centered" rather than "cares-about-highschooler's-reality." Some parents fixate on "family dinner" rather than engaging with their kids in other ways.

Instead,
- co-creating "can we figure this out together?",
- coaching "you tried but it's a little off. I didn't set you up for success."
- challenging productively. " You seem sure but I don't understand. Can you help me get there?"

This is not group therapy. This is not the place for working through past trauma. Small group discussion is for illustrating and pondering the concepts being discussed. Don't ask for vulnerability and disclosure and promise confidentiality and safety.
