The old Bridge at the Hermitage - queues to go walking in this place stretch down the dual carriage way. It's location that a few years ago was quite all the time and mostly only known to locals. Last year 88,000 people visited. This year over 350,000. It's under intolerable pressure.

A broken limb sprawls on the floor, the tree damaged and broken by high winds. And yet mosses, lichens and fungi thrive on it. Trees are of such value at all ages and conditions.

All summer I've been anticipating a VERY colourful autumn - much more sunshine in Scotland than usual, means more sugars that then turn into the anthocyanins which in turn, give leaves red and purple pigments. A group of birch trees surrounded by autumnal bracken.

Good to back on the wheel again today. A wonky teapot from too soft reclaimed (last years disasters and trimmings) clay. I had no right managing to do this after not touching the wheel for 8 months.

My pottery “season” is April to September (pottery shed is not freezing then) but I’ve started a bit late this year. I try to run a zero waste pottery, all disasters are recycled back into throwable clay, so the first job each year is taking all of last years minging slop bucket contents and reconstituting it into a usable lump. 9kg of it this year, horrible job, but done last weekend and today I got back on the wheel for the first time in 8 months or so. Usually I start with a cup, which collapses and gets recycle again as I try to remember how to throw. This year though I dove straight in and amazingly managed to throw a tea pot from my first kilo of clay which wasn’t really firm enough yet to do anything this ambitious with. A round bellied out jar form (not perfect but not bad for a first go) with galleried lid, a lid with a closed form knob thrown in one piece, and a spout from 100g of the trimmed off and rewedged, and by now very soft, lid clay. Nothing went in the bucket, hard to believe. Maybe this is going to be a good pottery season! Assembly, trimming and handle pulling next in a couple, of days. Nice to get back into it “You centre the clay, while the clay centres you”

Taken last month when I was walking through the Edzell Gorge. The North Esk River cutting a furrow through the rock, while sunlight tries to penetrate the foliage of overhanging beech and oak.
