Leading up to the livestream, make sure to read our article, adapted from the work of @andylee.bsky.social & other researchers about how sea snails that have migrated north are adapting to their new habitat: www.sciencejournalforkids.org/articles/why...
Why are some sea snails moving north? - Science Journal for Kids and Teens
Scientists wanted to find out how sea snails were adapting to new habitats in colder waters. Scientific article for students.

In addition to the article itself, there is a text-to-speech version for students with disabilities, as well as a collection of relevant teaching resources - you can see them on the article’s page. SJK will also be producing a Spanish version and a short video highlighting the teaching resources.

yeah totally forgot to specify by application (otherwise it’s def reasonable)
October 18, 2025 at 12:49 AM
realizing now that i didn’t specify *to apply* in my original post — totally understand that you’d need the phd by the time you start
October 18, 2025 at 12:26 AM
this makes sense for sure, definitely hard to plan around — thanks for the advice!
October 18, 2025 at 12:23 AM
that was my understanding too, but recently it’s been about 50/50 for requiring a phd to even apply (hence the frustration for graduating phds)
October 18, 2025 at 12:21 AM
which is even harder under the context of the current administration and job market
October 18, 2025 at 12:12 AM
i understand that completely, but that puts ABD phd candidates in a realllllly tough position that basically forces them to be without a job at the end of the phd (which is especially hard after 5-6 years of living under the living wage)
October 18, 2025 at 12:10 AM
yeah it’s definitely a hard place to be. i don’t want to graduate until i know i have a job lined up, but some of these jobs won’t even let me apply if i am not already graduated 😭
October 17, 2025 at 5:08 PM
grad students are so lowly paid we barely live paycheck to paycheck, having a degree requirement for postdocs basically only allows for privileged students who can take some months off to apply to those jobs
