Beans the tabby cat and Stephanie the tuxedo cat are lying together on a fuzzy blue blanket, folded atop a quilted white bedspread. Beans is in side-loaf formation, facing the camera, and (predictably) Stephanie is flopped over with her cat arms stuck out and her head hanging off the side. This is Beanie's favourite spot to sleep during the day--she's actually the reason I fold the blanket and leave it there--but Stephanie was there earlier this morning, so I'll assume she moved over to make room for Beans. Grudgingly moved, but moved. They get along well, but Stephanie can be a little dramatic. Beans just wants her fuzzy blanket; Stephanie wants to make a point. 😸

Stephanie is a smart girl! I walk through the door, and Beans is always there, waiting for her pets. If I call, "Stephanie!" she may or may not come, depending upon what she's doing. If I have a shipping box, or a shopping bag I say, "Stephanie! New smells!" she's 0 to 60 in five seconds! 😹

Outside temperature: 24f (-5C). Garage temperature? 24F? No. 40F? (4C)? No. 60F (16C)? Yes. Number of cat beds? 1? No. 5? No. 11? Yes. Contents of one small bed they've knocked off the shelf? Three skinny cats with thin fur and little insulation? No. The three chonkiest garage kitties I have? Yes.
Stevie Cookie the tuxedo cat, and Backpack and Andy, both tabby and white; all three jammed into one small cat bed that comfortably accommodates one fat cat. It's not at all cold in the garage, and there are lots of other beds of varying sizes, but for reasons know only to them, they've mashed themselves into a very compact cat pile in that one because cat.

You know that feeling when you've been lying in one position for too long and just *have* to move your legs?
Beans the tabby cat and Stephanie the tuxedo cat are comfortably ensconced on the bed, upon the fuzzy blue blanket-covered legs of their human, who is too hot with the blanket atop the regular bedclothes (keeps Stephanie's claws from damaging the bedspread) and *really* wants to move her legs. I can slide my hands under Stephanie and get out from beneath her without disturbing her much, but Beans is still learning that I make a good sleeping platform, and that would scare her. I eventually fell asleep, and at some point during the night, they got up, then Beans came back and tucked herself behind my knees while I was lying on my side, so again, I couldn't move. I gave up and hit the button that runs the "I'm awake" automation, turning on various lights and adjusting the heat, which Beans knows means it's time for breakfast. That got her moving! Unfortunately, it meant I also had to get moving. 😸

I'm cooking a proper Thanksgiving dinner for nine today. One human, and a motley collection of eight furry ingrates. I won't share the vegetables and stuffing, but somehow, I doubt they'll mind. 😸

I was too tired last night to stay up and wait for Beans' Snack Machine to dispense the last snack so I could wash the dish. I could have set a reminder on my phone to do it in the morning, or even left myself a note, but I just set a can of beans on the counter top instead.

Beans the tabby cat is loafing in her favourite corrugated scritchie box on a beige rug. Her nose is in a corner, and her face is "pillowed" on the edge of the box. She has plenty of softer and warmer places to sleep, but I think she likes it there because she's strategically placed such that I can't get in or out of the house without waking her up. Then we have to do the routine where she wails for pets, lets me give her exactly one per step as she walks away and I follow her to the kitchen. The kitchen is her scritchie place; she'll make a couple of trips around (it's not that big), and once she's found the least convenient place for me to bend over, she'll flop onto her side and give me her best, "I know you will" look until i give her scritchies. Could she just come and sit beside me on the couch for pets? Yes, and she very occasionally does, but she'd really rather I was uncomfortable. 😸

Normal cat: I'll just curl up here in this nice, fluffy bed, or perhaps over there in a quiet corner, or even on the comfy couch.

Stephanie: I'm tired. *flop*
Stephanie the tuxedo cat is flopped over on her side on a carpeted floor. While most cats choose a quiet, comfy spot to nap, Stephanie is as likely as not to just stop somewhere random, flop over on her side, and go to sleep. Here, she has cleverly placed herself in such a position that I can't leave the living room without her knowledge. She's not very food-motivated, but she is nosy as hell and doesn't want to miss anything. 😸

Cats With Jobs: George of Orange, dishwasher.

George showed up late for kitty supper, so he got his own, plus the not insignificant amounts that Andy and Big Steve didn't finish. Stephanie: Mum, look--I gotta bug for you!

Me: Wonderful. Arilus cristatus, common name wheel bug, one of the largest assassin bugs in North America. Not venomous, but bites are very painful and slow to heal. Thank you, Stephanie, for the lovely gift.
A 1.5" (3.8cm) grey assassin bug with a cog-like structure on its dorsal side lays in the palm of my hand. Unfortunately, it was deceased before I got it away from Stephanie, or I'd have released it; I like wheel bugs. It's warm tonight, so she must have caught it in their catio. She usually brings beetles, crickets, and the occasional moth; this is the first time she's brought anything that could have actually hurt her. Wheel bugs are pretty chill and don't bite (actually, they stab) unless you ignore their warnings, or handle them roughly, both of which I'm sure Stephanie did. Fortunately, she didn't get bitten, but I'll be quite content if she never finds another one. Stephanie has the dangerous combination of intense curiosity and no fear. 😄

Again on the world's second ugliest couch that just won't die, Beans the tabby cat is lying on a fuzzy blue blanket that covers the legs of her human. Unlike the first time, though, she wasn't nervous. She's rolled over on her back with her head almost upside down, and she let me pet her head, her sides, her feet, and even her belly! While she's learning that I won't handle her roughly or make sudden moves, I don't get up until she does, and let me tell you, this cat can nap! Stephanie stopped by to stick her nose in Beans' ear (I don't know why she does that) and lick her cheek. Beans is starting to show more personality now, and when I was eating Cheetos--all I could reach without moving her--I let her sniff one, thinking maybe she collects smells like Stephanie. She does not. She sniffed it, licked it, and took it so she could lick all the cheese off of it. Note to self: don't eat unhealthy stuff when Beans is on you because she collects more than smells. Beans has been here for ten months, and it's taken self-restraint to let her come to me on her own terms, but she's making great progress, and definitely has lap cat potential. I'm happy about that because she's soooo soft and poofy. Not bad for the hissy, swat-y little cat with RBF that the shelter staff despaired of ever finding a home. Great job, Beanie-baby!

The time I save by having robots vacuum the floors is largely lost in picking up the cat toys, boxes, tubes, and paper bags. I live in a cats' house that allows human pets.

For the first time in her life, Beans slept on me! She was evicted from the pound because nobody wanted to stick their hand in her cage to feed her. I wore her down with patience, and today, I had to take a two-hour nap because no *way* was I going to disturb her. Brave little Beans. 🥰
On the world's second ugliest couch that just won't die, two cats are asleep on a fuzzy blue blanket that covers the legs of their human. In the foreground is Stephanie the tuxedo cat, but since the weather turned cool, she's more or less been a permanent fixture on me. In the background, however, is Beans the tabby, and that's a big deal. Beans went from Animal Control in a nearby town to a cat's-only shelter because the pound couldn't handle her. She hissed, growled, and swatted, and they suspected it was the constant barking of the dogs stressing her out. Once in the shelter, she calmed down a lot, but still hissed and swatted sometimes. That's exactly why I wanted her; Stephanie needed a friend so she'd stop trashing my house, and I wanted the least-adoptable cat; the one who needed extra love. I don't care if a cat hisses at me--they're just scared--but Beans never has. Once in the quiet of my house, she was much better. Still skittish, but that can be fixed with love and patience...and it has. Brave little Beans saw Stephanie getting pets and scritchies, and overcame her fear to get some for herself. I still won't push her, but it worked well for her this time, so she'll do it again when she's ready. Maybe she'll be a cuddly lap cat after all. Maybe not, but thats okay, too; she's my Beanie Baby either way. ♥️

In the dim light of a bedside lamp, Stephanie the tuxedo cat peers out from beneath the white bed covers with the pupils of her eyes dilated. She usually goes up by my head, pushes her face against the blankets until I lift them and let her under to tunnel around like some kind of crazed ferret, then eventually, she stops by my lower legs and licks me, which is not at all conducive to sleep. This time, she tunneled the entire length of my body, then her little face popped out right in mine, and with big, black Crazy Eyes, so I knew sleep would have to wait. Once she's in nuclear fission mode, the only thing to do is let her burn herself out. If I evict her from the bedroom, she'll meow piteously, scratch the door, and reach her little white cat arms under it. That keeps me awake anyway, so I might as well let her play. Stephanie is Stephanie and she does what she does; I knew that a week after she got here.

Stephanie the tuxedo cat is carefully sniffing the insides of a laptop that's laying on a rug with its back panel off. Why am I doing this on the floor, you may ask? I began on the table, but she kept jumping up on the back of my chair, climbing my back, and trying to get on my lap to see what I was doing, and Beans was on the floor, meowing non-stop, so I gave up and let them check everything out thoroughly. Beans would have eventually left me alone, but once Stephanie is curious about something, you'd have to take it to another county to keep her away from it, so the path of least resistance is to just let her help. She ran off somewhere with one of the screws, but I had laptop screws that fit, so it worked out okay.

Peeping out from the top of the bin labeled "Beans" is the black and white head of a cat whose name is, in fact, not Beans, but rather Stephanie. She did get into her own after a few minutes, but of course, she had to be the first to try them both because Stephanie. I'm hoping this means that the bins I have in the bathroom for laundry will henceforth contain laundry, and not cats. We'll see how that goes.

Mum broght me a new smell today. It's punkin pie, but I got kinda stuck in the bag when I was smellin. It's a good one, though; sweet an spice. The smell. Not the bag. But the bag is OK, too. Very crinkle-y. --sTuffin🐾

I obviously don't let her smell dangerous things like spray paint, or mineral spirits, or epoxy, but anything safe for her is fair game. She never touches any of it; she just wants to collect the smell, and then off she goes to do...whatever it is that little Oreo gremlins do when Mum isn't watching too closely. She's an odd little thing, but very cute. ♥️

Miki got stuck on the garage roof (again) and I came outside to have coffee on the patio, only to hear literally the entire Herd meowing their faces off at me to help her get down. Once she was safely down, they all looked at me as if to say, "Meh," and left. Good to know I'm appreciated?

Hairy chicken, incubating his mason bee brood.
A bicolour brown tabby boy named Andy is asleep in a blue plastic container (actually a purpose-bought litter box) full of bundled mason bee tubes on my patio. Two small bee houses are in front of the container. Behind him is a lattice privacy screen with fake ivy wound through the lattice. With literally dozens of far more comfortable places to sleep, he has instead chosen to push the bundles of bee tubes into a makeshift bed. Because cat. The bees are outside so they'll know it's getting cooler, and around November, I'll soak the tubes and remove the cocoons for winter cold storage so they don't get eaten by hungry mice. In very early spring, I'll lay the cocoons out somewhere safe, and provide new tubes for the year's brood, and off my little bees will go to pollinate the earliest spring flowers.

Am I just *that* thick, or does Bluesky have no context for replies? Posts are okay--I don't make many--but if someone replies to a comment I made, and I don't know to which comment they were replying, how the hell am I supposed to find out? I've poked every button I've seen...? 🤷
