6) Finally, and most importantly, human dignity and hope is as important as food, water and shelter. We must always treat with respect those we serve and not forget our accountability to them. This goes beyond just donor accountability.

5) There is a long tail to disasters. Long after the TV crews and foreign aidworkers have gone, local people will continue the mammoth task to rebuild lives. Sadly, this recovery phase is often neglected, under-resourced, not prioritised compared to the more "exciting" response phase.

3) Don't just act in the here & now but anticipate future needs & risks - these are fluid & dynamic situations that change rapidly so flexibility & adaptability of response is vital.
4) Don't rush in a crisis but act in a controlled "slow hurry" - deliberately with intention yet expediently.

Some reflections:
1) The community is a key partner - community engagement is essential at every step to ensure our responses meet their needs.
2) B be always mindful of vulnerabilities & inequalities (e.g. gender, caste, poverty, etc). Otherwise, we risk worsening them or leaving unmet needs.

I was deployed with an emergency response team to Sri Lanka by an aid agency #Medair tasked with conducting a rapid needs assessment & to initiate initial response activities. Looking back, this was an unforgettable experience & privilege to have played a small part in the disaster response.

On this day 20 years ago, a major earthquake off Sumatra triggered a massive #tsunami that devastated several countries around the Indian Ocean. Nearly 230,000 people died and many more were left homeless in this #disaster.

Worth looking at Scotland as a comparator. Whilst their rates are higher than England, at least their alcohol policies have halted rising alcohol-related mortality. Minimum unit pricing as you suggest would be an important component of an alcohol strategy.
