The point I thought I was making was that UK and US practice differs. This may have been less clear than I intended.
I do prefer the British practice (although I also use double quotes). Preference is partly familiarity, and I'm British.
Consistency is more important either way.

As far as I'm aware UK publishers will put following punctuation outside the quotes unless it is a part of the quote.
I do not consider saving whitespace a valid argument when most papers are read in digital form.
