Literature and the art of possibilities. The central protagonist in this gem is Helm, a wind system that torments the upper reaches of the Pennines. Recommended!

Final preparations as we wait to welcome 800+ A Level Literature students & teachers to our emagazine conference @engmediacentre.bsky.social

Loved this. Loved it even more when I found out the author is an English teacher!

Brought half term to a close by reading about 'expressive writing'. So different to today's methods but there's still value in learning to 'write through writing' as @barbarableiman.bsky.social + I hope to show in our 'Big Picture Writing' webinar on Nov 25 www.englishandmedia.co.uk/courses/0a4b...

November's Big Picture Writing webinar with me + @barbarableiman.bsky.social explores 'composition-led writing' - getting something on paper + working with it. It's such an important part of any effective writing pedagogy! www.englishandmedia.co.uk/courses/0a4b...

The literary mind has much to tell & learn from the field of cognitive science. Very little of it bears any relationship to cogsci approaches imposed generically across subject areas 🙄

Conjures up all sorts of thoughts about learning with & through literature - with a premium on a form of imaginative thinking akin to Judith Langer’s ‘possibility thinking’ in ‘Envisioning Literature’. Literature has such an important role to play in today’s classrooms

When you've gone super-early on your half-term reads and don't know whether you'll be able to hold out that long!
September 22, 2025 at 3:42 PM
I've just realised that over half of the schools + colleges teaching A Level in the UK subscribe to emagazine and/ or MediaMagazine. That's a statistic to be proud of @barbarableiman.bsky.social www.englishandmedia.co.uk/emc-magazines/

We've been lucky enough at @engmediacentre.bsky.social to work with Raymond Antrobus on several occasions, so it was a real thrill to read his brilliant new memoir/ cultural history of D/deaf cultures. Highly recommended!

If the new curriculum allows space for books in translation then I can't think of a better one to include than this dystopian gem. Defies all expectations, sticks in the mind long after reading + compares brilliantly with other popular dystopias. The Road + Handmaid's Tale spring to mind

Such wise words in the @uklitassociation.bsky.social summer Voices newsletter. Taken from their submission to the Curriculum + Assessment Review. Let's hope they're listened to!

Busy proofing our 25/26 catalogue, which details everything we do at EMC. Very proud that our small team has so much reach - and grateful to all the teachers who put their trust in our work!

PROMOTING THE FICTION EFFECT

Thanks to the super-engaged and inspirational teachers who just took part in our What We Teach When We Teach the Novel at KS3 webinar this afternoon. Here's the closing slide, which sums up for me what makes teaching novels so exciting and interesting
May 8, 2025 at 2:57 PM
I'm running a webinar about teaching KS3 novels on Thursday and this slide pretty much sums up the approach being explored. Booking closes 8am tomorrow morning! www.englishandmedia.co.uk/courses/493b...

Thoroughly enjoyable read tracing the genealogy of English over the past 3 centuries. Fascinating and informative! www.routledge.com/Literacy-and...

It might run counter to our literary sensibilities, but giving marks /10 to various aspects of a novel is a brilliant way to generate thinking + discussion.

One of many things I'll be exploring in this May 8th webinar englishandmedia.co.uk/courses/493b...

YA version of A Little Life.

Hard-hitting novel of male friendship + coping with being dealt a terrible hand early on in life. Another gritty nomination for the 2025 @carnegiemedals.bsky.social. Resources for all shortlisted books on the EMC website englishandmedia.co.uk/publications...
March 31, 2025 at 2:58 PM
I'd have this down as a YA Trainspotting. So you might say it pushes at YA boundaries. Terrific read that will enthral lots of 14+ readers. Look out for the press outrage if it wins the @carnegiemedals.bsky.social !

One of my favourites on this year's @carnegiemedals.bsky.social shortlist so I was delighted to see it win the @waterstoneskids.bsky.social book prize for older readers. You can find activities to accompany the book in EMC's Carnegie resources englishandmedia.co.uk/publications...

Fascinating book. Made me realise how much the developers of LLMs know about language. Obvious, I suppose, but my focus was always on the tech side of things. Basically they take a Big Picture approach to language learning! @barbarableiman.bsky.social

Always a pleasure to get the latest @natefeed.bsky.social magazine in the post. Congratulations on new editor @thecockerill.bsky.social on his terrific first issue

Our Linguistically-informed Oracy conference is now full. Apologies to anyone who was hoping to come but wasn't able to book. We're looking forward to working with so many teachers on the day! www.englishandmedia.co.uk/courses/632d...

Fascinating read so far, including a pretty convincing argument that Adam Smith - he of Wealth of Nations fame - was the first teacher of English Language and Literature
