Australia’s got great wine and weather, but the scenery and the food and the people are better in New Zealand.

Yikes! That’s about 50 meters a day or 2 meters an hour! You’d be able to stand and watch it melt like a dropped ice cream on a hot footpath…

Yup, my high school tech drawing teacher used it, sometimes when talking about student work. And I still think of it driving on the motorway through Porirua, where you can look across and see the gigantic former Mitsubishi factory.

For something a bit more off the beaten track, take the train from Nagoya up to Takeyama, a lovely small city. Stay a night, then take a bus up to the world heritage farm houses at Shirakawa-go. Stay over in one of the old houses. A bit expensive, but amazing experience especially in winter.

Any of the onsen / hot spring towns would be a great experience, and many are reachable by train from the big cities. Matsuyama city is a couple hours from Tokyo by train or bus, has one of the best original castles, and some great hot spring ryokan/hotels on the outskirts of town.
