I wonder if there are ways to quantify and explain the differences, it’s interesting. How to separate vibes/nostalgia/selection bias from “no, for real, we’re just churning out so much now we can’t afford standards” and so on.

For a change of pace, maybe some books on epidemiology? The process of solving medical mysteries can hit similar notes as great sci fi.
