"Our mono-pictoral black & white world gave reluctant way to a serial picture world with hints of color in it. It wasn’t until I left Romania in 1965 that I realized that the world could be multi-imaged and color-explosive, and that people could actually wear unconstrained faces."

"The form of the poem should fit the subject: long fast lines, languorous jerky ones, or slow dark-syllabled half-sentences wrapped around domed Latinate dips and rises. Use the breath-measures that might have been those of your conceivers. One page, due Friday."

"In 1990, I was on a panel in Wyoming. Our hosts presented every panelist with a chunk of the fallen Berlin Wall, rugged chunks of cement with an inch or so of rusted rebar sticking out. Pieces of the Berlin Wall were sought-after souvenirs."
