A study of field pansies near Paris suggests flowers shift to self-pollination and decreased nectar production as insect pollinators become scarce. Millions of years of coevolution to build, but only decades to dismantle? Another call to keep diverse ecofriendly oases intact in our communities. 🧑🏻‍🔬🐝🧪

I'm not surprised, just twice as sceptical.

Welcome A/Prof Caitlin Byrt, Australian Natl Univ, who is leading a research team engineering plant membrane proteins (including my favorite channels, Aquaporins) as selective solute transporters, with biotech applications in food security and ultrafiltration of water.

Here's a first go at trying to draw a cartoon, inspired by the recent NPR story of radioactive waste being released into the Pacific from Fukushima. I hope it makes sense (?) : )

I.N. Reid saw NASA telescope ideas led by women had low approval rates. Over objections, he set up anonymous reviews in 2018, & for the first time % success for women exceeded men. The old chestnut 'not enough women in the pipeline' is a hoax. The real barrier in science is unconscious bias. 🧪🔭👱‍♀️

Cosmic question mark?
???
Captured in a corner of a recent James Webb Telescope image, the punctuation illusion between two galaxies merging seems to be saying to us: "Yeah, you... What the hell are you doing to your planet?"

The Foundation trilogy (1950s) earned a Hugo but left me less than impressed. Asimov's monochromatic view of a universe run by middle-aged white males lacked imagination. Kudos to Goyer, Friedman, and all the team for reimaging a rich tapestry of plots and characters in the TV series.
