With the « peace plan » Zelensky’s famous quote “I need ammunition, not a ride" from when he was offered evacuation by US officials during the initial phase of the 2022 full-scale invasion (which he refused), it seems we’re all in for a different kind of ride this time around. 7/7

Also, Europe’s own defense readiness and preparedness must be robustly strengthened. A lot of promising defense industry initiatives are under way, with investments in the range of 800 bn expected towards 2030, but the sense of urgency can hardly be exaggerated. 6/7

Which is why the free world needs to step up and deter russia, hold its leaders accountable, increase pressure and choke its war economy. Support for Ukraine needs to be ramped up and sustained; military, humanitarian, civilian. 5/7

In addition, the russian army rapes, tortures, abducts children, loots Ukrainian property, commits “human safari” drone killings and other grotesque war crimes. Their inhumane practices seem limitless. The moral decay of its political leaders bottomless. 4/7

Most of us - and Ukrainians in particular - want the war to end. putin could fix that instantly by withdrawing, but he doesn’t. Instead russia continues its relentless onslaught and cowardly bombardment of civilians and infrastructure, violating all basic principles of international law. 3/7

In his address, Zelensky speaks calmly and frankly about the gravity of the situation and the need to fight for the core values we have all become so conveniently used to Ukraine defending for the rest of us: freedom, dignity, unity and justice. 2/7
