Genealogist Elizabeth Shown Mills popularized the concept of the FAN Club. These people often appear in your ancestor’s records and can be key to solving tough questions.
Look for familiar names in land records, witnesses on documents, and census neighbors. Your ancestor didn’t live in a vacuum!

Before you rely on a record, make sure you understand what it actually is. Is it a death certificate, a burial record, or just an index of one? Who created it, and why?

Understanding the context of a record helps you interpret it correctly and avoid drawing the wrong conclusions.

Standing in front of my great-grandmother’s home—the place where my grandmother grew up. It’s amazing to imagine the stories these walls could tell and the generations that came before me who walked this same path. Have you ever visited one of your ancestors’ homes?

It’s tempting to copy a public tree, but that can lead to errors. Instead, let original records guide your research. Build your tree based on documents you can verify. If someone else’s tree has a clue, treat it like a lead to follow, not a fact to copy. #genealogy

Visited the iconic Boston Public Library while tracing my New England roots. Founded in 1848, it was the first large free municipal library in the U.S. Stepping into Bates Hall—with its green lamps and arched windows—felt like walking into history.

#Genealogy Tip: Boundaries Matter!
Your ancestor may never have moved—yet their records did.
