DeepSeek did not copy the playbook of US companies. It copied the playbook of US universities: 1. Asssemble the very best young talent. 2 Give them resources and freedom to do mad science.3 Focus on basic research— challenges with no immediate commercial application or profit.

Working on analysis of national security implications of DeepSeek. One burning question: what if US intel agencies had warned tech leaders weeks or months beforehand? Would it have made a difference? If so, how? Would stock freakout have been tempered? Would we have alternative models already?

The Trump admin is bringing disruption to US spy agencies. The question is what kind of disruption. Good disruption would revolutionize the use of open-source intel, AI tools, and outside expertise to track tech. Assessing where the US is ahead/behind China in key tech is critical.
