Yeah, as frustrating as it is to watch knowing what's coming down the pike, it seems to really help get things moving after the known bad thing has demonstrably happened. See surveillance, for example.

It's certainly complicated, but if a society did away with elected office and still wanted something akin to democracy, you would have to vote on huge numbers of initiatives. It would be hard for people to become informed enough to vote at that volume.

And it’s a community-wide public safety issue that will affect you, even if you’re not the one directly under threat from a rogue federal agency.
