Hi, I'm Amy, historian mostly of science with a lot of US history, author of two books, and that person you probably see if you fall asleep watching the Science Channel.

It occurs to me that if I'm finally going to be active here I ought to introduce myself!
I've been feeling for a while now that I have things I want to talk about that don't really fit on The Vintage Space -- so I've relaunched my second channel for some casual, more op-ed kind of videos. Inaugural video is up, and I'm excited about this!
Making content is awful now

Got lots of questions this week about how Nixon could possibly call the Moon for the famous chat with Buzz and Neil, so I made a quick little explainer!

I couldn't leave this one alone. Like it seems silly and harmless, but this is such a slippery slope in to damaging conspiracy theories like anti-vax and climate change denial, so I'm going to keep explaining it in the hopes people start actually thinking about things.
Like I wasn't going to respond... #shorts #kardashians
One day I don't have to keep repeating these points. Also I threw this together super quick last night -- hoping these are clear enough short answers! If you enjoy these shorts, consider supporting…

New book in the works so decided to share a little progress along the way with weekly updates! Still not talking specifics, but I will say this is an endlessly fascinating process.

Perhaps one of the most interesting elements of a lunar landing mission to think through: when and how do you launch?
How to get to the Moon #shorts #history
Launch window calculations are obviously more complicated than this, so take this as a primer! Other considerations were comms, spacecraft performance, and how the light would shift over the course…

Diving into the atom, I learned that it's possible to take X-rays with a roll of tape! And a vacuum chamber, but still! Some researchers have ever looked at this as a cheap way to bring medical imaging to developing nations to help local doctors.
You can take an X-ray with tape #shorts #science
I learned this and it's cool so I want you to learn about it, too! Here's a longer article: https://physicsworld.com/a/sticky-tape-takes-x-ray-images/

This one was entirely new to me when I found it the other day: a picture of Apollo 8 reentering the atmosphere, and what is likely the Service Module burning up! New Short has the details!

The Mobile Launcher (during Apollo, renamed the Mobile Launch Platform during the Shuttle era) is such a cool piece of engineering. The Saturn V's journey was amazing from the moment it left the VAB!
People had questions #shorts #history
After my video about the Crawler-Transporter a couple of weeks ago, I had a LOT of questions about how it was moved onto the launch pad and what happens to the whole thing during launch. Doesn't it…

One of the funnest parts of my latest long form video was animating all the different atomic models! So I threw them all together in a quick little short.

There's a really interesting parallel between Wernher von Braun and Werner Heisenberg during the war. As I dive into the atomic bomb for my new book -- the specifics of which I'm not sharing for the moment -- I'm excited to share some research tidbits!

SO much stuff coming about the atomic bomb program. And that's all I'm saying about specifics for the time being!

I started wanting to really understand how the atomic bomb was built. I ended up wanting to learn how we found the atom, so I made a massive video about it!

It took me a while, but I finally have The Vintage Space merch! Tantrum is an excellent, small company -- not one of the major print-on-demand vendors -- with great quality and colour options. Also each of these four designs was hand drawn by yours truly!

I think my favourite part about the whole conspiracy thing is conspiracy theorists are really convinced they've found some evidence Soviet intelligence experts missed. Apparently.

Another from the fun files! This was the era where there was, obviously, no 3D modeling. You had an idea, you did the math to design it, then you built a tiny one and flew it to see how it'd work. Just love old videos like this so wanted to share!
