4. River kisses Kamzin.
She's had a crush on this guy even before she met him. She kisses him back.

Later, as she climbs, she says to herself that it didn't mean anything. River doesn't seem to remember kissing her that evening.

River has secrets.🔥Kamzin will soon start to learn what they are.

3. Kamzin impresses River with her climbing skills. He impresses hers with his climbing skills, too.

River is younger than Kamzin thought an explorer of such talent and grit would be. Just slightly older than her. Wait, hey. Does he have a secret?! And I don't mean extra oxygen tanks.

2. No, Kamzin, no! You can't! You're too young! You are not supposed to climb mountains!

That's what she hears from her family.
But awry the plan goes.

And off goes Kamzin, climbing the mountain with River and others.

1. This YA book is called “Even the Darkest Stars." It is by Heather Fawcett.

Kamzin lives in a village near a mountain that has never been climbed to the top. Her mom died trying.

A famous explorer----River----has come to her village. He's going to climb it. Kamzin wants to go with him.

AizuWakamatsu City, in Fukushima

AizuWakamatsu is the first place in Fukushima Prefecture I ever went in my life.
It was on a school trip with students in a rural school in Chiba, in 1990's. AizuWakamatsu is not the only lovely part of Fukushima, but it's the place Japanese tourists visit most. ❤️

Um, what can I say? I guess nothing at this point.

What's the point of me ever saying anything?

5. It's taking me a lot to post this because I keep looking through the book and reading them to myself.

"As a poem I could show my children the man
I dreamed I was, my mother & fathers, my half
Brothers, the lovers I lost. Just morning, as a poem,
I asked myself if I was going to weep today."

3.
Words that make great sounds: "The umpteenth grumpy,
Jumpy retort."

"May all the gold you touch burn, rot & rust."

Ideas that get me thinking:
"You have a gun but to use the bullet....
(...)
You need the constitution. You havea gun."

"I don't know how to hold my face when I dance..."

2. When I read it for the first time, I went through slowly, reading a poem a day, in order. (Cuz that's how I read my books. lol)

Exciting poems, inspiring poems. Makes me sad, mad poems.

Some I feel are not really meant for me (a white older woman.) I almost feel intrusive?

1. “American Sonnets for My Past and Future Assassin” is a book of poems by Terrance Hayes.

The title of each poem in this book is “American Sonnet for My Past and Future Assassin."
Each poem has fourteen lines.

Great to flip through, and read whatever catches my eye....!

Fukushima City

Years ago, I saw this sign. 本

本!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was so excited.

Books!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's what it says.
I went up to it, practically drooling in anticipation.
But this bookstore went out of business. No longer a book store.

Anyway that is the kanji for "book."

Fukushima City

This is a mountain (or hill? It's considered a mountain) inside Fukushima City.
Fukushima City is basically flat, surrounded by mountains. (Fukushima City is a "basin.")

We have small mountains in our city, like this one. Mt. Shinobu.

It's very historic, and great to hike.

5. One of those culty religions was Salvation Army. Back then, it was literally meant to be an "army" for salvation. Saving people spiritually. It was (IMO) a cult.

Chester dated a young woman who was poor. Her name is Grace. Here she is:

4. IRL, there was a young man who'd been raised by parents that were into culty Christian religions. More IRL than in the book. (The book mentions it a little at the beginning, but just in passing.)

IRL, the young man (Chester) was raised by religious nuts, he left to work for his rich relative.

3. Actually----one person in boat.
So that means this is after he pushed his girlfriend out, murdering her.

This is what Dreiser's book is about.
Except Dreiser was actually using a real-life murder.

2. So okay, I was at Fukushima Prefectural library and pulled out a book I'd never read. (I've read pretty much all their books. This one was old and thick, so I passed it by for years.)

It was this book⤵️
I'm choosing cover with the two people in the boat, bc that is most similar to plot of book.

5. If you guessed that the other best man, Chasten, is handsome, rich, kind, funny, and SINGLE, well, you might have guessed what might happen in this book!

Not only is this book funny, it's also a romance.♥️
