Excellent audience question: how might the ethical and technical independence that undergirds #Blacksky be communicated its users? Fraser points us to this great explanatory thread by @msblis.bsky.social: bsky.app/profile/msbl...
So what’s the biggest difference?

BlackSky is an app within BlueSky… let me say that again. Yes, it feels like the same app because BlackSky is an app built on BlueSky’s framework. But shout out to Rudy — he created the infrastructure that specifically protects Black culture.

Fraser discussing complexity + difficulty of content moderation. Regardless: "Content moderation as community care and not a cost of business."

Also love the attn Blacksky has paid to inviting in diverse Black communities. 🌱 What emerges however is the added difficulty of intracommunity moderation.

Thinking Twitter as a uniquely Black app + shoutout to CashApp. Migrate to it, shape it, spread it... but not paid for it. Blacksky pushes against this, but Fraser notes its popularity (and Bsky's in gen) is tied to looking like Twitter. Fraser ties to skeuomorphism, familiarity. But what's next?

Love how Fraser turns directly to other on the ground work w/ mutual aid, which informs digital vision. Cites @tressiemcphd.bsky.social's desc of mutual aid: 'horizontal networks of solidarity,' quoting Matthew Whitley. Also, Dean Spade on distinction between non-profit work and mutual aid.

Now take quantum sims & make them accessible— NLP that anyone can play with. Two turntables & a pocket of qubits? Also, thinking @ curation, a lá @lillianyvonne.bsky.social. Not merely machine generation, but working in relationship w/ computation to *see*, or maybe feel, differently. Entangling.

Our first example follows mimicking Markov chains and blackout poetry refracted thru quantum processing. Thinking about entanglement, the introduction of dynamism — the power of context-driven generation — to remix hip-hop, meaning music and poetry.

Apparently I am live-skying my heart.

Now we are bathed in Patricia Hill Collins’ deep intelligence, pointing us toward thinking @ AI & social relations. It feels good to be brought to attention by a person of such immense capacity to focus us in witness of her critical gaze.

And also. Sitting here with my lab folk, my students, and my colleagues Tahir Hemphill, Lillian-Yvonne Bertram, and @mkirschenbaum.bsky.social. Grateful.

In this conversation with @umd-arhu.bsky.social, Jayson Porter, Hackett reminds us of Édouard Glissant, a Caribbean philosopher’s idea of opacity— the right to not always taking responsibility for translating cultural knowledge. Much at stake in thinking about where we locate archival material.
