against all odds, i followed an influencer/educator on a topic i'm learning and it took me six months to realize that i not only went to college with them, but likely went to many of the same dorm parties.

the routines of my life and habits keep me away from the fancier circles in Chicago, so when i read about boat slips costing something like $10,000/year, and that there's a waiting list, i'm reminded there is an echelon(s) of people here that i will simply never meet or understand.

in addition to the base level horrors of all that's occurring, one aspect of these times i will never forget is just how many people used it as an opportunity for scolding, for self-aggrandizing moralizing, and for sheer cynical reputation building.

a lot of the struggles with trying to learn anything online is that the algorithms seem to only reward posts/videos that resemble influencer content, and so even the most well-meaning instructors eventually adopt the styling and affects of influencers.
