On war on the rocks it was pointed out that drone defense in Ukraine was initially complicated because defenses were borrowed from the civilian world. Eventually folks moved to radar guided guns. But yea you can’t use AA guns at an airport.

10 yrs sounds wild. Thinking abt it more, remote sensing satellites already generate a ton of data and iirc have to discard bits to get to the ground. Edge compute makes sense there an to allow more humble users to get products. But that’s orders of magnitude diff from a true data center lol.

Also I’m out of touch but I recall a reason for not using state of the art GPUs used to be there not as robust to cosmic rays for longer duration missions. “Disposable” GPU sats enables that. But again it’s totally different from VAST DATA-CENTERS ON ORBIT

I’ve wondered if data centers in space started from an idea of doing remote sensing data processing on orbit and then got caught up in marketing. E.g laser link SAR platform to a GPU satellite. Keep downlink sensible and constantly upgrade compute.

I’m pretty sure you can’t sue the USG for defamation. Like with Carroll her first lawsuit was dismissed because Trump was in office and statements were protected under the Federal Tort Claims Act. Iirc Trump repeated his statements after leaving office.

I don’t even get the problem. At Stanford many professors said top individuals in their field would freeze if placed in a crowded room with a clock and most gave take home exams. I dunno maybe the Stanford Math department isn’t up to the Atlantic’s standards.

The only upside is throwing the admiral under the bus makes everyone in the military fearful of obeying the administration. Now that’s definitely bad for America but at this point the alternative is worse.

Now if only I could mine hundreds of tons of uranium, build a reactor, do plutonium chemistry, mill and pour primaries………

I think it embodied the spirit. I was very impressed and watched it many times all at varying degrees of sobriety.

“Cruise missiles” come from the Sonoran region of Arizona.

The unlawful killings of civilians and threat of invasion may seem like theatrics to some but they undermine the very principles the US seeks to uphold in the pacific….

Quick video that highlights the challenges (atomic oxygen, new design requirements for aerodynamics and collecting oxygen). The orbits been proven for normal electric propulsion. Air breathing would be cool tho youtu.be/vEfatzhHhvg?...

They’re seen more as an interrogation technique. They make you very uncomfortable and allow the interrogator to claim the “data” suggests you’re being dishonest and position the interrogator as a your partner trying to help you by getting more details to address what the ”machine sees”.

I know someone who became a billionaire. Unfortunately there’s *some* logic to it. Eventually almost everyone you know is after their money. They retreat to other rich people and view society as an enemy. Echo chamber. I just don’t think humans are designed to handle extreme wealth/power.

There’s a sad but somewhat romantic take to this whole shit show. We keep looking for someone to swoop in and save the day only to slowly realize that someone is us.

Interesting points that the GMD portrayal (poor accuracy + only two shots) can lead to the wrong takeaway (invest in GMD) and that a bolt out of the blue eliminates much of the moral complexity.

I get that reliance on Chinese isn’t good, but if China is the principal adversary haven’t his broad tariffs only strengthened China’s hands and unnecessary harmed the US economy?

Someone told me the damage was much worse than lowering the amount of cargo the shuttle could carry to the station - smaller cargo means the interfaces take up more and more of the modules mass.

Anyway don’t know where I’m going with this so I’ll end here lol.

But even with HSF the public only cares so much. The moment we saw ISS as an opportunity for arms control (Russian employment) we shifted it to a higher inclination and ruined its potential for orbital assembly of a large exploration vehicle.

The unfortunate part is the human side has been so rudderless since Apollo it’s become pork (senate launch system lol). To their credit NASA did try. Shuttle and ISS were critical steps to exploration (long duration missions, orbital assembly, heavy lift).

Someone I know used to advise NASA leadership during the Constellation days. Within NASA, science and human spaceflight are often seen at odds, but their sense was absent the human spaceflight component, NASA’s budget would collapse.

I would say I’m not experienced with this lol. I most chat on private channels where I know people. I do think the conversation made progress and that’s why I kept responding but I will delete those posts at least on Popehat for the heartburn. I traveled 5000mi today and I need to disconnect.
