This is crappy comms designed for our crappy press to regurgitate. All visa applicants are already required to demonstrate proficiency, they’ve just raised the pass mark a little. The idea that this *now* means being proficient in English is a requirement is completely untrue.

I have access to the Telegraph article via Apple News. It claims that Whitehall departments have sponsored 400 visas for foreign staff this year. That’s clearly a tiny proportion of the overall hiring / employment levels but I’m not convinced that it’s a very good idea.

And I do get your point that it is less aggressive and more effective (generally) to confront the behaviour than the person themselves, but Jenrick then went on to tweet this. He's claiming he's been called "racist". He wants the fight, he thinks this is an acceptable position to adopt
