I’ve been looking into charging Bend visitors (who don’t pay property taxes, our transportation utility fee, and no sales tax) a different rate to park. Residents would get a discounted rate. Preliminary modeling and legal analysis look promising. Would love to get your input on it!

Thanks for this (and for teaching me a new concept - anthropodenialism. The idea animals cannot have human-like emotions and vice-versa).

It is overly aggressive for sure.

Don’t say no to a balsamic vinegar tour of you can find one. Amazing experience!

Yeah, that actually could be the goal for this admin…

It costs so much to take them down, put them up, take them down… I bet businesses (and customers) would love to keep them up.

Sounds like lots of good things are happening and I’m sure it’s not by accident!

Was it lack of space for two-lane roundabouts or something else that led to trying single lane roundabouts?

Bend now has over 50 roundabouts but we are seeing a move towards 2-lane ones whenever there is space and it’s awful.

Now I have another reason to pick up this tank top I saw on Marketplace!

To be clear, the map is bad not just because it gives partisan advantage, but because it divides the county by arbitrary lines that must be redrawn a minimum of every decade. There are better ways to ensure representation.

If putting in a crosswalk is dangerous, that street has other problems to deal with!

It’s wild how some Portland streets are great and others seem like they were designed to be as deadly as possible. Like 4 lanes of high speed traffic, not even a painted crosswalks, people trying to cross… looking at you, NE Lombard!

A fun question is what if Copenhagen (or Utrecht!) residents swapped places with American residents?

Would outcomes be any different? In other words, how much is cultural/behavioral vs environmental?

I got to visit Copenhagen a few years ago. A few takeaways:
1) significantly lower speeds
2) smaller vehicle sizes and better designs
3) narrower lanes & streets
4) more people not driving makes drivers more aware

What is the new gig? 🤔
November 22, 2025 at 12:34 AM
Before the mtg I wondered “why bother” because I didn’t see anything of value coming from it.

That was wild!

Police should normalize requesting smartphone data during crash investigations to see if the driver was using the phone. Right now this typically requires a warrant and it is hardly ever done.

Our legal framework makes it easier to drive distracted than to enforce distracted driving laws!

Thanks to @bikeportland.org for pointing out that gathering signatures halts all the funding from the transportation bill until Nov 2026. Wish other coverage would point that out too.
November 21, 2025 at 8:23 PM
I wonder how many of owners or managers with these signs realize just getting the signatures to put the referendum on the ballot pauses all the funding until Nov 2026.

If you see anyone asking for signatures, ask them if they know this will happen! Do they want the layoffs and lower services?
