Occasionally, I make noise: #ambient whatevers and retro-chill tech some-such - https://amberlucent.bandcamp.com/ / I was on mp3dotcom years ago / #photography and dabbling in an abundance of hobbies.
People are people. The more you get in one location, the more crap gets amplified. The idea is that separate instances could have their own culture, and they can. As always, the problem is people. This is why I doubt a perfect solution. Perhaps better we have less connection rather than more.

I know. I've run one. It all depends what you look for in social media. I think scale is an issue. I doubt there is a perfect answer. One issue is people thinking social media should be as big as Twitter and provide a similar experience. Decentralised can be very small.

Tbh, this is why Mastodon, based on Activity Pub, is a better long-term solution. Profiteers won't touch it. Bluesky just has the user base.

Going to check it out.

I really don't know. You choose an instance and go. Seems easy to me. Lots of people seem to have it in their heads that it's only for nerds who like complex apps.

It's a social app built on a federated platform, not unlike Bluesky, but completely open source. All non-profit. Very much an anti-capitalist vibe. Lots of ex-Twitter people signed up but found it too complex (I don't think it is at all) or hated there was no algorithm to game.

JSP?

Mastodon is better for that. Genuine engagement but less engagement overall, is my experience. Bluesky is better for the numbers at this point.
