Magritte's "The Lovers II." The shadows are beautiful, the subtle pink of the sky, the imposing dark muted frame that contains them. Like soundproofing. I found the curation interesting - as you gaze on this image of shrouded love, a full torso of a naked woman is depicted on the wall beyond.

Magritte Monday! I am still so struck by the framing and curatorial context of each painting.
A preparatory sketch of Magritte’s “the listening room.” Sketch of a very large apple taking up almost the entirety of a room with floorboards and a window on the right. Framed in a light, modern, gold frame with a linen mat Magritte’s “The Listening Room.” Large oversized, delicious-looking green apple a room with oaky wooden floorboards, beige walls x and a windy to the left with glimpses of green landscape and blue sky. The ceiling is white with the shadow of the apple hanging heavy on the right. The frame of the painting is large, and heavy black with simple geometric features catching a little light from the lights above, but otherwise forming a dark space around the painting. The entire piece is hung on a very dark brown-green wall. This makes the light in the image itself, shining through the window on the left appear more vivid. The bottom left hand corner of the frame for the painting “The Listening Place.” You can see the floorboards in the painting in greater detail as well as the frame’s carving, which is carved with what appears to be simple geometric chip carving, painted black, but appearing more dark brown in this image. This is a close-up of a little of one panel. It is taken at an angle toward the painting, so the texture of the carving is also highlighted by the light, and the apple is just visible on the right hand side.

Still obsessing over the frames and curation at the AGNSW Magritte exhibition. Given how much the frame impacts the art, and Magritte's interest in playing with framing, there's a really interesting piece of work to be done around the material frames and their interaction with each work.
A photo of the bottom right hand corner of a frame, the outer edge of the moulding is gold-gilt, with a grey sage linen inner moulding and mount, which is also gold gilt along the edge next to the painting. What we can see of the painting is a tiny Magritte signature in the very corner, along with - nearer the middle of the painting and in the centre left hand corner of this photo - two men in dark long coats and bowler hats, one leaning in toward the other with their weight on a walking stick. They observe a grey rock-like edifice, which is the bottom of an apple that has the texture of a grey rock. In this image, without further context, it looks like the rounded bottom of a large rock. (or my daughter says it looks like the bottom of a grey moon) This is a photo of the whole painting of two tiny men in long black coats and bowler hats dwarfed by an apple with the texture of a grey rock that is the main subject of the painting. The painting's background is dark orange at the top fading like a sunset to a sandy beige at the bottom. The frame's golden highlights appear bolder in this photo, perhaps intensified by the wall where the picture is hung, which is a murky brown. This photo places the grey apple in its context on the brown wall between two other Magritte paintings which have black frames and are, overall, paler images.

Visited a Magritte exhibition today. Paid attention to the way each work is framed. A lot of the literature doesn’t seem to focus on just how much framing impacts an artwork. Up close, fascinating to wonder how each frame came to be exactly as it is.
