the error of logic here is almost comedically simple: where do people want to live? and the answer is the "cherry-picked places" where housing prices are high, because the correlation between high-demand places and job opportunities/economic advancement/general productivity is overwhelming

because Texas's map is specifically being struck on racial dilution grounds i think this really puts the screws to the Supreme Court, also, because there's basically no way to thread the needle between "California's map is invalid, Texas's isn't" that won't be obvious bullshit

the median white person in Alabama almost certainly still supports (a softer, more plausibly deniable form of) segregation and is just straight up a racist in polite, all-white company, and these political beliefs are demonstrably less frequent among non-Southern white people
