My companion piece explains the film’s context: USAID’s dismantling is estimated to have already killed 600,000 people, ⅔ of them children. Officials simply deny any harm, while halting data monitoring and firing inspectors general who’d have documented it. 2/

Today @TheNewYorker released our short documentary “Rovina’s Choice” online.

It traces the ongoing effects of the sudden shutdown of US foreign aid through the story of one mother in Kenya as she seeks to save her daughter from sickness and starvation. 🎥 1/ www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...

Today officially makes this the longest government shutdown IN HISTORY.

Republicans control the White House, Senate, and House. This is their shutdown.

We can't afford the Trump regime. The shutdown is costing US taxpayers billions of dollars *per week* and weakening the entire US economy at a time of rising inflation and job stagnation. #EndTheTrumpShutdown @ourpublicservice.bsky.social

If you want to know why we can’t give Trump a blank check, look what he did to USAID — illegally dismantling an agency that saved millions of lives and literally burning food meant for starving people.

As I told former USAID staff this week: their work was the best of America.

Bad news: many will experience delays in getting benefits. (USDA & states need time to access and distribute the benefits.)

I’m inspired by hundreds of former USAID federal workers still fighting for democracy, development and community action. Trump and DOGE may have snuffed out USAID, and sacrificed hundreds of thousands of former beneficiaries, but the spirit and solidarity of its staff persist.

Meanwhile Amazon and other large corporations and wealthy individuals are bankrolling the destruction of the White House and the #GOPShutdown. If they can afford this, they can A) afford huge taxes, B) deserve fewer federal contracts, C) don’t deserve our hard earned money.

@sanders.senate.gov
Trump gave Amazon a $16 billion tax break to accelerate its investments this year.

Now, Amazon will replace 600,000 workers with robots as Jeff Bezos accelerates his plan to automate warehouses.

No. Corporate tax breaks do not trickle down to workers. Never have. Never will.
