And yes, academic books are more expensive now. Don’t ‘well akshually’ me about how many cows it used to take to make a manuscript of Boethius.

I am talking about the latter half of the twentieth century. Most new books from both major and academic publishers are now shoddier and also cost more.

I do happen, in fact, to know a few things about this subject, and the prospect of engaging is not attractive in view of the tone that is being used.

I don’t think it’s nice to pay $250 for an academic book in which the text is printed less crisply than in a cheap paperback of the 1970s.

The entire western hemisphere straight up ignoring this makes it so much fucking worse

Some forms of color printing that are now available on a mass-scale are definitely less expensive and higher quality than the kinds available just a few decades ago!

But overall the trend in hardback book production has been downward. Hard, even for those who want it, to buy good bookcloth now.

Moreover, many of the cost reductions of the mid-century did not reduce quality. A Knopf hardback of the 60s is infinitely superior to practically anything today that is mass produced.

You are talking about the very lowest range of the market. I am talking about the middle to upper range of the market.

Hell, the print quality of a lot of pulp novels *was*better than that of a lot of books put out by academic publishers now.

On the other hand, some things have gotten appreciably much worse, like the print quality, binding, and overall graphic design of almost all books.

Things can change in unexpected ways.

I think people need to find a way of acknowledging that many influential people have malign intentions while also remembering that the future is not already determined by the fever dreams of the wicked and the lost.

I have worked with Federal employees and government officials. They would not accept a cup of coffee or a taxi ride. This gets you fired from any federal job. Waste, corruption, abuse. BTW, no apologies if I am impolitic, the she here if not a victim, she is a volunteer and nearly as guilty
