My second book, A History of Council Housing in 100 Estates, is a full colour hardback so not cheap but it's currently discounted and obviously worth every penny. It would make a wonderful Christmas present for someone special in your life. 😊

One of my favourite photos from the Thames Foreshore this year, view from Wapping Old Stairs across the river to Rotherhithe. Taken on a gloomy weather day just like today, an eerie Thames mist took us by surprise as it appeared from nowhere and rolled silently upstream, shrouding the landscape.

Not long after I left school, in the late 70s I worked in the admin (personnel) dept for Merseyside Fire Brigade, and the Firefighters still took courses to earn the title "Merryweather Turntable Ladder Operator", so this photo and story fascinated me as I had no idea of the history of Merryweather!
The story of the first East Ham Fire Station and Fire Brigade, from a time when the service recruited only ex seamen and naval personnel as the Brigade was run on Naval discipline and familiarity of climbing rigging and working at heights, more at alondoninheritance.com/london-histo...
