The dike propagated ~30 km as multi-scale rebounding waves of magma intrusion and rock fracturing, triggering the intense, surrounding seismicity. We find magmatic intrusion is more complex than previously recognized, with implications for physics- and data-driven modeling and eruption forecasting.

Magmatic intrusion can lead to hazardous eruptions, but is hidden from direct observation. We reverse the Coulomb stress criterion for earthquake triggering to image in detail the dike intrusion (at 10 km depth!) from the distribution of ~25,000 precisely relocated earthquakes from February 2025.
