Lilith looks at Ava with a hatred that could melt glass. "You don't get to come back, not now, not when I've finally started to move on, and pretend that you ever—" Ava's eyes burn back at her so hot that Lilith almost takes a step back. "Don't you dare. Don't—you think—what do you think that was for me? You think that was easy for me? You think my choices were clear?" Lilith crowds into Ava's space; neither one of them is backing down, but that doesn't mean Lilith won't pretend. "I think your choice was very clear, and it wasn't me." Then Ava's hands are clasped around the back of Lilith's neck, pulling her down, and Lilith meets Ava's lips halfway. There's nothing tender about the way their hands move and claw at each other's clothes and skin, the way they suck and bite at each other's lips. It's raw, and violent, and from the outside it looks like two women so desperate for each other's love that they'd devour each other if it meant staying together. When their lips separate, Ava's hands are fisted around the straps of Lilith's black tank top. Lilith has one hand threaded through the hair at the back of Ava's head, the other flexing uselessly at the curve of her hip. Lilith lets the moment ride, eyes lidded, her breathing heavy and uneven. Her head moves as if of its own accord, towards and away and around Ava's, like she's thinking about returning to the well of Ava's mouth for another drink. Ava looks intoxicated, like she doesn't know what she'll do next and doesn't care. "And CUT!!! That was perfect!" Beatrice's voice is like a warm blanket over Lilith's nerves as she separates properly from Ava. "Thank fuck you remembered to hold the fucking moment this time, I thought we'd never finish." Ava rolls her eyes. "Fuck you too, Lilith."

“Next we’re going to draw blood. Or one of my assistants will. Hold your left arm out to the side please, and look to your right.” Camila stepped into Mira’s field of view and held Mira’s right hand in their left. “This is going to sting just a little.” Jillian tsked. “Pinch. You’ll feel a pinch, then you’ll be fine.” She nodded to one of the lab assistants, who had moved behind Mira with various strange objects, pale and translucent in parts, metallic in others, on a metal tray. When Mira felt the needle pierce her skin, she thought that neither of them had been right. It definitely wasn’t a sting, she had been stung twice when she was little by a hornet and that hurt much worse. Pinch wasn’t right either, it hurt more than that, and caused a faint soreness to blossom in the crook of her arm. Whatever the right word would have been, Mira was not too bothered by the pain. It wasn’t anything close to having her guts ripped out by an Angel, or even someone getting a good shot in during training at the Cradle. The pain didn’t bother Mira. What bothered her were the sounds.

To #WarriorNun fic authors: if you see a guest comment being hurtful, it is almost certainly a cookie cutter comment intended to cause pain and has nothing to do with your fic. Here are some examples of comments I have seen reproduced across multiple fics recently, all from guest accounts:

You have no business writing. None. You lack the fundamental understanding of storytelling, of human psychology, of basic English composition. It's truly shocking. How can someone be this devoid of talent, yet possess such a massive ego? You are a blight. A stain on this fandom. I sincerely hope this is the last time you ever consider picking up a pen or sitting at a keyboard. Just… don’t.

I didn’t hate myself as much today. I miss Bea. I still don’t think I can stand to see her. I keep imagining her looking at me the way I look at myself. I know I shouldn’t. I hate it though. I hate that it hurts so much that I can’t even stand to get out of bed. I could be helping. I should be helping. Bea could be in danger, is in danger, and I just. Then I think what if it comes back. What if I hurt her again. I don’t trust myself. But it helps. It helps to talk. And I’m not scared with her. I hate toothpaste!” Ava’s mom seemed to not have heard her, and was still at the woman’s door, chatting. “Toothpaste is important! And if you don’t like it, that’s probably why your teeth are falling out, because they’re rotting!!!” Ava shrieked. “My tooth fell out because it’s a baby tooth and I’m getting a grown-up tooth, and you would know that if you weren’t such a baby!” “I know all about grown-up teeth, because my dentist said I don’t need to worry about that yet. Maybe you should get a dentist so you could know why you need to brush your teeth everyday so your breath isn’t gross.” By now Mrs. Wilson seemed to have turned around to intervene, and was saying something to Ava’s mother, who was just running up, but Beatrice didn’t care what they had to say. Ava narrowed her eyes and pointed at Beatrice dramatically, which wasn’t very nice. The school had a “no pointing” rule for a reason. “I’m gonna put a curse on you, Beatrice.” “That’s not real, you can’t do that!” “I curse you to have nightmares every night until you say sorry for being mean to me!!!!”

They moved as one, and if Ava had once thought that dancing with Beatrice was perfect, it was only because her view was so narrow as to be blinded. There was no concern for Camila, or need to deny her own feelings, doomed though they might be. There was no shame in appreciating the strength of Beatrice’s fingers in her hand, or on her back, or the way their hands danced along each others arms and shoulders and whatever part might be touched while preserving the illusion of innocence for the assembled nobles. Dancing with Beatrice now, having known each other’s flesh, having felt at no remove greater than the depth of skin the way Beatrice’s muscles moved just so, having felt her heart beat and having made it race with nothing more than her touch…to be able to touch her now, move with her, and none to gainsay, felt like belonging in a way Ava had never known. If only it could last.

Post-canon, mature romance. Also my most-liked fic despite a premise that I think scares some readers away at first blush. Angst, happy ending, Ava comes back to find Bea in love with someone else, leads to happiest post-canon ending I could write.
